Subshrub
with stout, erect branches and very short, stiff linear
leaves, up to 30 cm high, native to the Mediterranean
area, mainly in Spain. Using the flowering top on
steam distillation the Spanish origanum oil is obtained.
This
essential oil is appreciated by its content of carvacol,
its major phenolic component. Major producing country
is Spain, but also in Israel, Lebanon and Turkey.
The plant must be collected on August to obtain fine
oil.
