CISTUS OIL


Cistus labdaniferus, labdanum and cyste.

Shrubs native to the Mediterranean region, specially Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and northern part of Africa. Cistus is very sticky and fragrant, with white flowers and linear, lance-shaped leaves, up to 2 mtrs. high. Parts used are the leaves and twigs. Gum is the oleoresin obtained by boiling the plant material in water. Oil is getting by the distillation of gum. Concrete is produced by hydrocarbon solvent extraction of the dried leaves and twigs. Absolute is coming from the concrete by alcohol extraction.

An essential oil which is truly a Cistus Oil is produced in Spain by steam distillation of the entire herb of Cistus Ladaniferus. True Cistus Oil is a pale orange liquid of a very peculiar, warm herbaceous odor. The odor bears some similarity to that of Roman chamomile, bitter fruits. The tenacity is much strong with an immense power in its topnote. It produces good effects in lavender bouquets, colognes and spicy after shave fragrances.
