HELICHRYSUM OIL
Helichrysum angustifolium, immortelle and everlasting.
Strong aromatic subshrub with much branched stems, woody at the base, up to 0,5 mtrs high. Native to the Mediterranean region, mainly Italy, Spain and France, growing in dry sandy soil. Parts used are the fresh flowers or flowering tops. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation from the flowers, and extracts (concretes and absolutes) are prepared by solvent extraction.
The yield of essential oil from helichrysum angustifolium is very poor but certain closely related species of helichrysum. Helichrysum Oil is a pale yellow, oily liquid of powerful and diffusive, but pleasant and rich, natural odor. The topnote has certain features in common with those of the extracted material and these topnotes are not exactly attractive at high concentration. The sweetness is so rich and overwhelming, honeylike and deep, that it takes more than the average imagination to appreciate the odor of this oil. However, the sweet fruity and tea like, delicate backnote is unique and the tenacity is quite outstanding.
