ORANGE OIL

Citrus aurantium, citrus vulgaris and citrus bigaradia.

Bitter orange is an evergreen glabrous tree with long but not very sharp spines and very fragrant flowers, fruit pulp is very better and sour, up to 10 mtrs. high. Parts used are the peel of the fruit, flowers, leaves and twigs. Bitter orange oil is obtained by cold expression. Neroli oil is produced from the freshly picked flowers by steam distillation. Petitgrain oil is obtained from the leaves and twigs by steam distillation as well. Major producers countries are Spain, Italy, France, Guinea, Tunisia and Paraguay. The Spanish oil is considered the best quality.

This oil should not be used anywhere on the body because of its phototoxic effects. The essential oil from the peel of the almost ripe fruit of the bitter orange tree, Citrus Aurantium, is produced almost exclusively by expression. Cold pressed bitter orange oil is a mobile liquid of dark yellow to olive yellow or pale brownish yellow color. The odor is very peculiar, fresh and yet bitter in the sense of dry, but with a rich and lasting, sweet backnote. There are notes which remind of bergamot, grapefruit and sweet orange, but overall, the odor is distinctly different from that of other citrus oils. It is a different type of freshness, a peculiar floral backnote which occasionally shows indolic notes and a comparatively good tenacity.
